NATIONAL LIGHTHOUSE DAY: August 7th

Lighthouse, Cape May Point, NJ
Ocean City NJ activities abound, but we are also very conveniently located to a wide variety of things to do and places to visit in our southern New Jersey area!

"National Lighthouse Day" is celebrated on August 7, but any day is perfect for visiting some of our local beacons.  In Cape May County, you can see the Hereford Inlet Lighthouse in North Wildwood or the Cape May Lighthouse in Cape May Point. In Atlantic County, there's the Absecon Lighthouse (New Jersey's tallest) to tour.

Lighthouses are fascinating - even romantic - structures.  The most famous historical structure is probably the Alexandra lighthouse from ancient Egypt.  Said to have been built around 280 BC, it was among the tallest man-made structures in the world (estimated from 377- 443 feet high) for many centuries.

When the ocean was too deep to allow for the construction of a building, a lightship was utilized instead. Basically, this is a powerful light mounted on a ship.  There is one of these fascinating boats in nearby Lewes, Delaware, the Lightship Overfalls - a National Historic Landmark.

Any or all of these locations would make an interesting day trip from the Scarborough Inn and yet another interesting activity during your Ocean City vacation.
